EL PASO, Texas – July 16, 2013 – Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) has received a grant of $1900 from the El Paso Bar Foundation to support technological upgrades at the Medical-Legal Partnership for El Paso (MLP).
The financial support will be used to upgrade poorly working computer equipment used to serve low-income residents of the El Paso area. A joint project of TRLA, the University Medical Center, the El Paso Children’s Hospital, and Centro San Vicente Family Health, the MLP helps low-income families receive legal assistance at the same location that they receive medical care. An estimated 130 El Paso families received legal help through the MLP last year.
“The support of the El Paso Bar Foundation comes at a critical time for legal aid,” said TRLA Executive Director David Hall. “Many of our advocates use aging technology that makes it difficult to provide help to low-income Texans in need.”
The El Paso Bar Foundation’s support comes as TRLA faces severe budget cuts that are forcing the legal aid organization to cut back on services to low-income Texans who are unable to afford the high cost of hiring a private attorney. In prioritizing costs, technological upgrades are often overlooked or postponed, forcing advocates to work with aging equipment that urgently needs to be replaced.
“Last year we helped more than 3,000 low-income El Pasoans with their civil legal needs,” added Hall. “These upgrades will help limit the impact of legal aid budget cuts in the El Paso community.”
