When Brendan Gill took his first job out of law school at Bexar County Legal Aid in 1971, he was told it was probably going to be a temporary gig.

Many lawyers considered a job with the organization, which focused on the legal needs of the poorest in the community, as a temporary stop before making more money in private practice.
