Rio Grande Valley Attorneys Honored for Commitment to Victims of Domestic Violence

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – August 5, 2011 – Nine private attorneys, including three from the Rio Grande Valley, have been honored by Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) for donating their time to help victims of domestic violence with the legal issues they face when leaving an abuser.

The attorneys were honored as part of TRLA’s annual Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Cross-Training Conference in San Antonio on Friday, August 5th.  The three day conference brings together legal aid attorneys and staff from domestic violence shelters and rape crisis centers to collaborate on the most effective ways to serve victims of domestic violence and help them rebuild their lives after leaving their abusers.  The attorneys received their awards at the conference’s closing luncheon.

“Without these attorneys, there are many victims of domestic violence who would not have received the help they need to leave their abusers and protect their families,” said TRLA attorney and conference director Maricarmen Garza.  “It is impossible to truly describe the value of their work.”

Rio Grande Valley attorneys honored include Annette Hinojosa (Raymondville), Nereida Lopez (Mission), and Seferino Trevino (Harlingen). All three honorees have helped numerous victims of domestic violence at no charge.

Added Garza, “Without our volunteer attorneys, it would be impossible for TRLA to impact the lives of thousands of low-income Texans each year. Their efforts save lives.”

Established in 1970, Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, Inc. (TRLA) is a nonprofit organization that provides free legal services to low-income and disadvantaged clients in a 68-county service area.
