Rio Grande Guardian – Lawmakers urged to boost funds for legal aid

Former clients of legal aid organizations from across the state came to the Capitol today to share their stories with lawmakers.

They also urged them to support a slew of modest court fee increases that Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid and other groups say could help make up a major budget shortall. Lawmakers are proposing budget cuts for basic civil legal services by 51 percent, or $23 million over the biennium.
