On February 3, Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) hosted a new free legal clinic in Brownsville to help residents who are considering filing for bankruptcy. The new bankruptcy clinic is a part of TRLA’s Community Justice Program, which works with local bar associations to provide free legal services to low-income clients by pairing residents in need with legal aid employees and private attorneys who volunteer their time.
The new clinic is aimed at individuals facing serious debt who have considered filing for bankruptcy. At the clinic, attorneys advised the residents about their legal options, educated them on their rights when dealing with debt collectors, and began the process to declare bankruptcy, if advisable.
