Diana Saldaña says she’s honored to become President Barack Obama’s first federal judicial appointment in Texas. But Saldaña says she’s even more humbled by the fact that she’s replacing Senior U.S. District Judge George Kazen of Laredo, who was slated to swear her in on Feb. 11 after Texas Lawyer’s presstime. “It means a lot to me,” Saldaña says of Kazen, her personal and professional mentor. Saldaña served as a law clerk for Kazen in 1997 and became a prosecutor in his court for five years. Most recently she assisted Kazen as a U.S. magistrate judge in Laredo.
