The State Bar of Texas participates in the national pro-bono celebration each year, highlighting the work of many Texas attorneys dedicating their time and talent to people who cannot afford an attorney to assist in their most pressing of needs.
Attorneys provide free or reduced-rate services to individuals and families throughout each year. This national celebration gives another opportunity to look at the realities of access to justice and the limitations that restrict people from obtaining legal assistance.
For those who live with incomes near or below the national poverty guidelines, some civil legal services are provided by various legal aid clinics. Some of these are funded by the Legal Services Corporation and, in Texas, the State Bar of Texas Access to Justice Foundation. The funding is derived from foundation grants, government contributions and interest earned on certain attorney-owned bank accounts.
