Rio Grande Guardian – LUPE: Border Patrol activity will serve to strengthen and unite immigrant community

Leaders with La Unión del Pueblo Entero believe the current heightened activity by Border Patrol in Hidalgo County colonias will only serve to strengthen the immigrant community.

“We have never experienced this much oppression and repression in the colonias before but we will ride this wave,” said LUPE community organizer Martha Sanchez of Alton. “We see this as an opportunity to get better educated on our rights. It is an opportunity to unite the communities. They need to be united to have more power.”

LUPE has received hundreds of calls from colonia residents over the last week concerning the activities of Border Patrol. So have Spanish language media outlets. The agency’s agents have been seen apprehending immigrants in the colonias, in the Dollar General stores, and outside Junior’s Supermarkets, H-E-B, and Wal-Mart stores. That never used to happen.
