LegalFront – Legal Aid Programs Sue State Regarding Food Stamp Program

Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA), Lone Star Legal Aid, and Legal Aid of Northwest Texas represent more than fifty low-income Texans and five nonprofit organizations in a lawsuit against the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). The legal aid attorneys allege that Texas’ food stamp program illegally prevents low-income residents from applying for much-needed help and keeps qualified families from getting the aid they need in a timely manner.

According to the plaintiffs, Texas law requires the food stamp system to be maintained so that resources are widely distributed among those in need. Unfortunately, according to the plaintiffs’ allegations, HHSC officials have adopted policies that result in only half of qualified Texas families receiving assistance.
