A housing-voucher waiting list for thousands of low-income families will be opened Monday for the first time in almost three years.
The list by the Housing Authority of El Paso is for the federal Housing Choice Voucher Program, formerly “Section 8.” The program subsidizes rents for qualifying families in private rental homes and apartments.
“The last time the wait list was opened in mid-2007, the first day it opened we had 3,000 to 4,000 people come on down to the County Coliseum. Some were camping out ahead of time,” said Shane Griffith, spokesman for the Housing Authority.
