Trail Blazers – Food stamp backlog: State slow to work off?

A report on hunger today set off some sparring between lawyers for poor Texans trying to get food stamps and the embattled state agency that’s trying to fix a years-old mess in its eligibility-determination unit.

The issue: Whether the state Health and Human Services Commission promised last fall to work off a backlog of more than 42,000 unprocessed food stamp applications by this month.
