Before the state begins a campaign to get more people to apply for the food stamp program, it needs to process the applications it is getting in a timely fashion.
In a recent trip to Texas, Kevin Concannon, undersecretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the country’s top food stamp official, blasted the state for having the worst-performing food stamp program in the U.S.
He told reporters Texas lags far behind other states in its food stamp enrollments. Concannon noted the state could be providing food stamps to 650,000 more people and increase the amount of federal funds coming to the state from $4 billion to $5 billion.
