State Auditor John Keel is giving priority to a request for help in finding better and quicker ways to get food stamps to needy Texans.
The state’s beleaguered food stamp program continues to have a large backlog of applications. More than 40 percent of the applicants are not processed within 30 days, as required by federal guidelines.
In November, more than 73,000 applicants out of 172,920 did not get handled within the required time.
