CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – October 26, 2009 – The Corpus Christi legal community will be coming together this week to celebrate the city’s first official Pro Bono Week as part of the American Bar Association’s National Pro Bono Celebration.

Officially declared Pro Bono Week by Corpus Christi Mayor Joe Adame, the city will witness several events that highlight the work done by local attorneys on behalf of low-income Texans who cannot afford to pay for legal help.

“Not everyone with legal problems can afford to hire an attorney,” said Sandra Garza, Pro Bono Coordinator for Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA)’s Volunteer Lawyers Project. “Without pro bono attorneys, there are hundreds of people in Corpus Christi every year who would not get the legal help they need.”

The annual National Pro Bono Celebration showcases the difference that pro bono lawyers make to the justice system.  The celebration lasts from October 25 through October 31 and is dedicated to encouraging private attorneys to donate pro bono hours to low-income residents in need of legal help.

To recognize attorneys who have donated their time to helping low-income clients at no cost, TRLA will be hosting a special training event on Friday, October 30, at the Nueces County Courthouse.  Attorneys who have volunteered their services with TRLA will receive free legal training from TRLA experts on issues such as family law, foreclosure, and domestic violence issues.

Added Garza, “This event is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to the private attorneys who have dedicated themselves to giving back to the Corpus Christi community.  Without their support, there would be a lot of people in need.”

Established in 1970, Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, Inc. (TRLA) is a nonprofit organization that provides free civil legal services to low-income and disadvantaged clients in a 68-county service area. TRLA’s mission is to promote the dignity, self-sufficiency, safety and stability of low-income Texas residents by providing high-quality civil legal assistance and related educational services.
