SAN ANTONIO, Texas – June 2, 2009 – Ten private attorneys are being honored by Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) for their commitment to serving victims of domestic violence by volunteering their time at local shelters.

“Without these attorneys there are a countless number of domestic violence victims who would not have received the help they need to leave their abusers and protect their families,” said TRLA attorney and conference director Maricarmen Garza.  “It is impossible to truly describe the value of their work.”

The attorneys practice law across the state of Texas and have all devoted their time to taking pro bono cases on behalf of TRLA for victims of domestic violence. They were selected through a collaboration between TRLA and its domestic violence shelter partners.

The attorneys will be honored as part of TRLA’s annual Legal Access to Rural Shelters Conference in San Antonio on Friday, June 5th.  The three day conference brings together legal aid attorneys and staff from domestic violence shelters to collaborate on the most effective ways to serve victims of domestic violence and help them rebuild their lives after leaving their abusers.  The attorneys will receive their awards as part of the conference’s final luncheon.

Added Garza, “Without our volunteer attorneys it would be impossible for TRLA to impact the lives of thousands of low-income Texans each year. Saying ‘thank you’ is the least we can do.”

Established in 1970, Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, Inc. (TRLA) is a nonprofit organization that provides free legal services to low-income and disadvantaged clients in a 68-county service area. TRLA’s mission is to promote the dignity, self-sufficiency, safety and stability of low-income Texas residents by providing high-quality legal assistance and related educational services.
