After the first few letters, Laura knew she was in love.

And though she had never met the man who penned them – the man whose personal ad she found in a local newspaper – she agreed to travel 2,000 miles to see him.

She left Idaho less than a year ago, where she was working as a migrant farm worker, for Harlingen, where the two of them planned to get married.

The man sounded mature and successful. He sounded like everything Laura was not: a U.S. citizen, and financially stable. She couldn’t believe her luck.
