“I didn’t grow up wanting to be a lawyer,” says Rodney L. Nelson, the 2008 recipient of the J. Chrys Dougherty Legal Services Award. When he moved to Austin in 1970, he planned to get a Ph.D. in philosophy. The native of St. Louis, Mo., had graduated from Luther College, a liberal arts school in Decorah, Iowa.
But thousands of Texans Nelson has aided over the years may have his ex-wife to thank for his decision to earn a law degree.
Nelson says that when his former wife, Linda Aaker, started classes at the University of Texas School of Law, he began to think the law might be “a suitable area” for his talents and interests.
