The Monitor – Border fence condemnations begin in Hidalgo County

A compromise plan to combine border fence construction and levee repairs may have spared most landowners in Hidalgo County from government property seizures.

But residents in one tiny community are still receiving an education in the realities of eminent domain.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Justice started condemnation proceedings against a Los Ebanos property owner, seeking to take part of his land to build the border fence.
