In her opening prayer at the Webb County Domestic Violence Coalition’s conference Thursday, Sister Rosemary Welsh called on God to help those in attendance break the chain of domestic violence.”Quebra la cadena,” she said. “Break the chain.”
Thursday’s opening keynote speaker was U.S. District Magistrate Judge Diana Saldaña.
Saldaña shared with those in attendance the story of domestic abuse in her life. She described how the cycle of violence began with her grandparents, spread to her parents and eventually took its toll on Saldaña and her siblings.
“It just permeates the household,” she said. “It takes over the house and you get more violence, upon violence, upon violence.”
Growing up in an abusive family, Saldaña said, leaves people thinking violence is the norm.
“It was just the way it was,” she said. “It was just something you accepted.”
